For 12 years, Americans Caitlin and Samuel Dowe-Sandes, founders of the contemporary concrete tile company popham design, have called Marrakech home. Raised on the east coast (she is from Maine, Samuel was raised in Vermont), the couple lived in New York City before moving to Los Angeles, where Samuel worked in the film industry. By the mid-2000’s, however, they needed to shake things up. “We came to Morocco to change our lives, and we did,” says Samuel. For many of those years after founding Popham Design, a studio that crafts vibrant, design-forward tiles that marry Moroccan traditions with modern style, they dreamed of developing a collection of luxury handmade products for the home to complement their tile collection.
As a result, the couple of designer is proud to debut popham+, a capsule collection informed by the artisanship of Marrakech. The idea was simple, to celebrate and maintain a traditional artisan craft while updating it with beautiful materials like brass, leather and stone, all imbued with a degree of playfulness. The collection draws inspiration from Morocco and its rich history of pattern.
